To an ordinary individual, an airport is just a place where they travel to and from a particular destination. It is a travel hub that connect different countries around the world. But to business minded people, running an airport can be a thriving business that will generate them millions if not billions of profits yearly. Since travelling by air is considered the fastest and most convenient means of getting from one place to the other, more and more flights have been available and the need for air travel as increased significantly over the past years. In fact, all major cities in the world operate their own international airport. Smaller towns, on the other hand, run domestic and regional airports that serve flights locally.
Airports are like mini cities that offer great services and cater to the needs of all kinds of travelers. People who passes through the airport everyday do not really pay much attention on how the place is being operated. But you can’t help but wonder how airports work. Picture this, a typical airport in the US caters to over a hundred million people who are coming in and out of the country in a year. Managing a company is already a formidable task what more when you need to operate an airport catering to hundreds of thousands of people daily.
The amount of traffic and number of flights in an airport will depend on how big it is. For major airports commonly seen in top cities, they usually handle thousands of flights carrying hundreds of thousands of passengers in a daily basis. Just imagine the humongous amount of people coming in and out of airports. And to think that these people do not just go there to board a plane but they also need to use restrooms, grab a bite, make hotel reservations, rent a car and do a lot of other stuff. Knowing that, airports must ascertain that these people will be well taken care of. To ensure that, airports created different facilities to meet all the needs of the people passing in it. A typical airport would need to have a fully functioning runway, ground concourses, passenger terminals, hangars, ground transportation, control tower, and fuel depots.
There is indeed a lot of things going on in an airport. Concourses and terminals, the groundside of the airport, are areas accessible to the general public, both passengers and non-passengers. This is where ticket sales, baggage claims and passenger check-ins are done. Security here is tight and only passengers are allowed to pass through the gate areas. Most also connect passengers to different ground transportations both public and private. Meanwhile, the air side of the airport is where the hangars and runways can be found. Only authorized airport personnel are given access to these areas.
Regular maintenance is the key to having efficient airport service. A big chunk of the airport’s revenue is allotted for its beautification and maintenance which aims to best serve the people using it.
